How To Setup Your Very Own Home Theater

What is a home theater? And how do you set one up? Both good questions and both have fairly simple answers, thankfully! A home theater, also known as a home theater system, is generally a combination of a theater quality television (or video projector), a DVD player, and a high quality sound system (usually featuring Surround Sound, but not always).

Let's first examine what constitutes a theater quality television. By today's standards, your best bet is a big screen HDTV. This can be a regular HDTV, plasma, LCD, etc. Quality TV screens are not as expensive as they used to be, so you can get a good sized screen for a modest amount. If you want a really large screen, though, a projector may be the better option. You may opt to have your TV on a nice TV stand or hang it from the wall for that special, modern touch.

Another option is to purchase a projector, also known as a DLP projector or LCD projector. You'll also need to purchase a screen for the projector to project onto. This will obviously be more theater-like than a regular TV. But bear in mind that an HD projector is really going to run you a lot more money than most HDTVs on the market today. However, you have the advantage of a larger screen and, again, a more theater-like experience.

Another disadvantage to using a projector is the room generally needs to be dark. This means you'll need to keep blinds closed on your windows when using it during the day. Sun lovers, beware! Night owls, never fear! There can be some serious set-up issues involved with using a projector, and for the largest screen size, you?ll need a relatively large room.

When it comes to choosing a DVD player, you may want to get a Blu-Ray DVD Player. If you have a HD screen or projector, you may really notice the difference of quality. As of December 2008, over 1,220 DVD titles are available on Blu-ray discs. Almost all Blu-ray DVD players can also read standard DVDs and CDs, so there is really no downside to choosing a blu-ray DVD player, except for the price. A normal DVD player can be purchased for as low as $20, but you can expect to pay $200-400 for a blu-ray player. Prices will likely go down as the technology becomes more widespread, though.

As far as a sound system, get a surround sound system with subwoofer for the best experience. A 300-500 watt system will be plenty for most people, but if you really like your movies to shake your chairs, you could go large 1,000 watts or more. Look for a system that gives good quality sound in all registers - high to low. Remember that not all surround sound systems sound great, so try them at the store if at all possible. Big names, like Philips or Logitech tend to deliver what they promise. The off-brands may save you money but might not hold up over time and may not deliver the true home theater experience you desire. Philips is one well-known brand that has a wide variety of home theater components, including DVD players and TVs.

Oscar Buzz for the 2009 Academy Awards

Usually Academy Award nominees are announced on the Tuesday four weeks before the live ceremony, but this year that Tuesday is Inauguration Day (January 20), so the announcement will take place on Thursday January 22 instead.

The Academy Awards are film awards presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that recognize excellence in the film industry. Awards, or Oscars, are presented to directors, actors, technical professionals like sound engineers and make-up artists and writers among others.

Each year entertainment, news and celebrity magazines like Entertainment Weekly magazine, Time magazine and People magazine like to track and predict the upcoming awards, creating "Oscar buzz." This year is no different and as films were released in the fall, magazines began the Oscar buzz.

This year there is an enormous amount of Oscar buzz surrounding the late actor Heath Ledger. Ledger died of an accidental drug overdose in January 2008; in the summer his appearance as "The Joker" in the "Batman" sequel "The Dark Knight" got critics and fans started on the Oscar buzz early. Ledger has already won the Best Supporting Actor at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, usually an accurate indication of how Oscar voters will vote. Other winners at this year's Golden Globes are "Slumdog Millionaire" for Best Motion Picture Drama, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Mickey Rourke for Best Performance by an Actor in a drama, Kate Winslet for Best Performance by an Actress in a drama and Kate Winslet for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

Other awards that indicate Oscar votes are the Screen Actors Guild and the New York Critics Circle awards.

In the past other notable actors have been posthumously nominated for Oscars including James Dean. The first and only actor to actually win a posthumous Oscar was Peter Finch in 1977 for his best actor performance in "Network."

The Oscar race for "Best Picture," the ultimate prize, heated up again in December with the release of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" on Christmas Day. Other predictions include "Frost/Nixon," "Milk," "Doubt" and "The Changeling."

While Entertainment Weekly magazine predicts "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" will live up to the hype and anticipation it has created, the entertainment magazine also predicts "Revolutionary Road" and "Last Chance Harvey," have formidable shots at big Oscar wins.

Other buzz-worthy long shots according to Entertainment Weekly are "The Wrestler" and "Nothing But the Truth."

Kate Hudson Magazine Leading Lady

Hudson is the daughter of Academy Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn, who is best known for her perky personality and bohemian fashion sense. Hudson's father is Bill Hudson, a lesser-known actor, comedian and musician. Hawn and Hudson divorced when Kate was a toddler. Hawn raised Hudson, along with son Oliver in Colorado with her long-time partner actor Kurt Russell, whom Hudson considers to be her father.

While she appeared in several modest movies in the late 1990s, her breakthrough role came in 2000 as the band groupie Penny Lane in director Cameron Crowe's fictional musical bio-pic "Almost Famous," for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.

That same year, Hudson married Chris Robinson, front-man of the rock group The Black Crowes. People magazine reported the couple tied the knot in front of 70 guests in Hawn and Russell's Old Snowmass, Colo., backyard with a string quartet playing on New Year's Eve.

In the 2002 Hudson followed up her "Almost Famous" success with a starring role in the remake of the historical romance "The Four Feathers," with Wes Bentley. Unfortunately the film was panned by critics and audiences alike. However, her next movie, "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," grossed more than $100 million at the box office. The romantic comedy solidified Hudson as box office gold. Hudson followed up this success with the mediocre movies "Alex and Emma" and "Raising Helen."

In 2005 Hudson starred in the thriller "The Skeleton Key," which grossed more than $91.9 million worldwide and was a considerable success. She followed "The Skeleton Key" up with the successful comedy "You, Me and Dupree" in 2007.

In July 2006, Hudson sued the British version of the National Enquirer after they had stated that she has an eating disorder and described her as "painfully thin." Hudson said that the tabloid's actions were "completely inappropriate" and a "blatant lie," and specified her concern relating the impressions about weight that she feels the tabloid could have on young girls.

On November 18, 2006, Robinson filed divorce papers, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized on October 22, 2007.

Celebrity magazines like People magazine, OK! magazine, Us Weekly and Star magazine reported rumors of Hudson having an on-set affair with her co-star Owen Wilson. The couple was photographed several times and appeared in People, Us Weekly and Star magazines. Hudson and Owen appeared to have a brief 4-month relationship. Afterward Hudson is dogged by celebrity magazines and seen dating Dax Shepherd and Lance Armstrong.

In 2007 Hudson directed the short film "Cutlass", one of Glamour magazine's "Reel Moments" based on readers' personal essays. "Cutlass" co-starred Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Virginia Madsen, Chevy Chase and Kristen Stewart.

People magazine named Hudson one of its "100 Most Beautiful People" in 2008. Hudson appeared on the issue's cover.

In 2008, Hudson appeared in the romantic comedies Fool's Gold and My Best Friend's Girl. In 2009 Hudson will be seen in the comedy "Bride Wars" along with Anne Hathaway. Entertainment Weekly magazine recently announced Hudson will appear in the highly anticipated movie musical "Nine" alongside top actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench, to be released in the fall of 2009. Hudson subsequently appeared on the cover of W magazine.

For the first time, Hudson appeared on the cover of Elle magazine for the magazine's February issue.
