Rocky I (1976) was a movie which rocked the country. Though there was a series of Rocky films which followed the original one the original one was the finest of them all. It was a low budget movie which was completed in a record 28 days. It was probably the most influential movie in the last 30 years. The movie was given three Academy Awards from its 10 nominations. Moreover, it made Sylvester Stallone a superstar.

The brilliant story was about a simple minded, working class Italian hero who was a good-natured individual. He was handed an improbable chance to fight for the heavy weight title for which he dedicates himself. In the process he falls in love but at last realizes his potential. It had a complicated screenplay with rich characterization and splendid dialogues. This movie was influenced by a real life individual.

Field of Dreams (1989) was a celebration of the love of baseball. It is almost dream like. It was adapted from W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe" by the director/screenwriter Phil Aldem Robinson. It was a sentimental, modern fantasy classic which became a smash hit in its unique depiction of America. The movie also touched upon the religious theme of faith and redemption.

Kevin Costner did full justice to the character of Ray Kinsella who is an idealistic, transplanted city boy turned lowa farmer. Standing in the middle of the cornfield he repeatedly hears a voice which tells him to build a baseball field in the middle of his cornfield. He builds it and it becomes the playground of ghostly ball players (seen only by the believers). The movie was so realistic that viewers almost really believed in the ghosts of "shoeless Joe" and the games they played with Ray to be rehabilitated.

The Karate Kid (1980) was a big hit and youngsters became crazy about Karate. Lovable loser Daniel moves to California and entangles himself in a fight with a band of moped riding karate bullies. He then turns to a Japanese maintenance staff for guidance and learns karate, learns about life and falls in love. He enters the tournament against the same bullies but in the semi final is injured on a cheap shot. He rallies back to fight his girlfriend's ex boyfriend in the finals, and wins at last. Mr. Miyagi's character (played by Pat Morita) was a stroke of genius.

Raging Bull (1980) was undoubtedly one of the best films ever made by the maestro Martin Scorsese. It lost out the best picture award in 1980 Oscars but is the 1980 trendsetter in all aspects including direction, screenplay, editing and cinematography. Robert de Nero probably gave his best performance in this Oscar winning role. The skillfully made film was both praised and criticized and was rated one of the best movies of the decade. It won two Oscars after being nominated for eight.

The Hustler (1961) is a realistic adult story of a small time, ambitious, struggling, self-destructive pool shark, commenting on winning and losing, life and love, loyalty, greed, self respect, selling out and ultimate redemption. The story is adapted from the book of the same title written by Walter Tevis. Robert Rossen is the director-producer-writer of this intensely dramatic film.

Paul Newman in the lead role became a leading actor with this film but he was denied an Oscar though. This famous movie, filmed in black and white, received two Academy Awards out of nine nominations.

Technology has brought with it many new and well-made movies, but these movies would never get obsolete. These evergreen movies would continue to entertain moviegoers, generation after generation.

Trailers are film advertisements that are meant for films that will be released in the near future for public viewing. They are actually a sequence of selected shots from the films concerned. The main aim of any movie trailer is to make the audience aware of the film so that their interest and curiosity could be raised. How To Make A Great Movie Villain

The English Dictionary describes a villain as a 'a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot.' The villain will generally be placed in direct opposition to the protagonist, offering an almost complete mirror image to that of the hero. Where the hero of a movie will promote good behaviour and virtue, the villain will seek to disrupt harmony and possess evil characteristics that contradict those of the protagonist.

To create a great movie villain, there are many characteristics that must be incorporated. For the character to fundamentally work as a menacing villain, they must be enigmatic with a sense of mystery surrounding them. Although not all villainous characters will possess this quality, the very best baddies will be almost complete enigmas.

An indifferent and enigmatic villain can be threatening as a villain with an almost cartoon-like evil uniform like Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th. In The Matrix (1999), the army of 'faceless' agents are cold and emotionless and suggest an unbeatable threat with which the hero cannot reason or negotiate.

The all-powerful emotionless villain is portrayed excellently in the X-Files TV series by William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Throughout the series he is constantly in control of the heroes and any attempts to kill him are deemed self-destructive or futile. His power over the protagonists' behaviour is linked to his role in the Syndicate, a mysterious organisation who seemingly are more powerful than the U.S. government.

Cigarette Smoking Man is not the traditional stereotypical villain, as he often hesitates in destroying the hero - Special Agent Fox Mulder. On many occasions, Mulder's life is under threat and Smoking Man regularly prevents the Syndicate from authorising Mulder's murder. His absolute power, suggested by his behaviour towards the show's protagonists, is questioned within his role in the Syndicate as he is often belittled and degraded. However, despite his authority being questioned in these scenes he is till regarded as an obvious force with his control over Mulder's destiny.

A sinister and disturbing persona can often be acquired by a villain when their behaviour is deemed unpredictable and erratic. This is often portrayed in movie villains that are criminally insane such as The Silence of the Lambs' Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Played by Sir Anthony Hopkin, Lecter is a psychiatrist, cannibal murderer with the ability to manipulate and control those around him.

Lecter's power comes from his intelligence and seeming lack of compassion. He uses extreme violence and rarely shows any sign of emotion, which only reinforces his role as a great movie villain. Other characters that have possessed a similar menacing quality are The Shining's Jack Torrance and Psycho's Norman Bates. Although, these two are considerably different in terms of motive, their threat is based primarily upon their lack of self-control.

A lack of self-control may not be the most dominant trait in the next villainous mention, but it is certainly a key aspect. In 1984, The Terminator burst onto movie screens all over the world as a relentless, unstoppable killing machine. This fearless, expressionless villain who will not feel pity or remorse was upgraded for the film's sequel in 1992 when the relatively basic Series 850 Model 101 was outdone by the superior T-1000 model.

T-1000 offers all of the same frightening characteristics of the original Terminator but with an additional ability of shape-shifting. T-1000 is more advanced and so provides a more threatening villain, made from liquid metal and able to mimic various objects including John Connor's foster-parents and his mother. This ability to shape-shift increases T-1000's villainous abilities massively as he is able to manipulate and deceive his victims against their will and judgment.

On the opposite end of the scale are the villains that are emotive, excitable and with exaggerated personas as demonstrated by Heath Ledger's villain in the most-recent Batman film, The Joker. The latest incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime perfectly conveys his lack of empathy and almost-humorous contempt for human life. The most prominent aspect of The Joker is his colourful clothing and unusual physical appearance, with white face make-up, dyed green hair and smudged red lipstick.

The cartoon origins of the character lend themselves well to the movie villain, as his appearance is funny and appealing superficially. This technique is also used in other creations such as Stephen King's It and Chucky in Child's Play. These villains will play on children's trust as they emotionally shape-shift from a friendly face to a horrific villain.

Among the characteristics of the perfect villain, the key component is absolute evil without any redeeming features. This is rare in movie villains as often the antagonist is usually a tortured soul, abuse victim or in extremely weak films a misunderstood character. However, every so often a pure evil villain will arrive and send shivers down the spines of movie-goers everywhere.

The ultimate movie villain, Darth Vader from Star Wars, is as mysterious and dark as any film character in history. Although we do learn things about Darth Vader during the films, he is both physically and psychologically masked and cloaked - adding to the character's haunting menace. From his height (he was played by an actor nearly two metres tall), to his menacing voice which was dubbed over the original actor, Darth Vader is the most iconic movie villain in film history.

To make the ultimate movie villain there are a number of these characteristics that will help to make them memorable, dark, unpredictable and terrifying. Most movie villains will possess some, if not most, of these and will command the viewer's respect and fear. For those villains that possess all of these characteristics and more, we must affirm their status as the ultimate in movie villainy.

Science fiction films have mesmerized the audience the world over with their surreal adventures and special effects. These kinds of movies attract young people the most. But films like Star Wars and Superman have a universal appeal. Science fiction films take their audience to a dream world where everything is out of this world and larger than life.

When we look at the best five science fiction films, we should start with the series of films called Star Wars directed by none other than George Lucas. The third film is also directed by Ridley Scott. It is named Alien and it came out in 1979. The film is about a stellar mining vehicle Nostromo, heading back to Earth. It intercepts a signal from a nearby planet; the crew is under obligation to investigate. The most important scene from this film almost became iconic with an infant creature bursting bloodily through John Hurt's chest. The interstellar mining vessel takes onboard a life form with concentrated acid for blood and two sets of jaws, which then messily dispatches the crew. The film was praised for the gothic set design and Sigourney Weaver's portrayal of reluctant hero Ellen Ripley.

Penelope Cruz Comes Home to Film New Movie

Spanish-born actress Penelope Cruz was recently photographed arriving on the island of Lanzarote. This sun-soaked tourism paradise will provide the backdrop for Cruz's latest movie. Few details have been released about "Los Abrazos Rotos" ("The Broken Embrace"). In fact, exact locations for filming had not even been finalized upon the crew's arrival in Lanzarote. It is tentatively set for release in Spain in 2009.

The movie is written and directed by Spain's own Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar seems to be smitten with Penelope Cruz, at least for her talent. Almodovar is openly gay, but maintains a close friendship with Cruz. The two are often seen together in public, especially when working together. He has directed Cruz in a number of other films, including "All About My Mother" (1999) and "Volver" (2006). Her portrayal of a mother dealing with a teenage daughter's crisis in "Volver" led to Cruz's nomination for a "Best Actress" Oscar. Cruz was the first Spanish actress ever to receive such an honor. Their long history and ability to mesh undoubtedly led Almodovar to invite Cruz to star in his latest project, "Los Abrazoz Rotos."

Work began immediately upon the crew's arrival on Lanzarote on May 25, 2008. The first order of business: scouting film locations. They were spotted just a day later at Lanzarote's famous Guatiza Cactus Garden. The area was highly guarded and Cruz shielded from the public. Time will tell if the trademark windmill of Jardin de Cactus makes a guest appearance in "Los Abrazos Rotos." The film will likely contain some aerial shots of the area since film crews were spotted in a helicopter overhead.

Penelope Cruz has starred in a number of American films. Some of her U.S. credits include "All the Pretty Horses" (2000), "Blow" (2001) and "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" (2001). Cruz won an Italian Academy Award for her performance in the 2005 film "Don't Move."

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1974, Cruz spent the early years of her life devoted to another art. She studied ballet until the age of 15. It was at the tender age of 17 that she was cast in her first film "Jamon Jamon" under Spanish director Bigas Luna. Within just a few years she caught the attention of Pedro Almodovar. The Magic Of Charlie Chaplin's Movies

In the spring of 1889, Charlie Chaplin was born to almost unknown music hall entertainer parents. The boy grew up to be the greatest international star of the American silent comic cinema. He also became twentieth century's first media Superstar, the first artistic creator. Chaplin was the first acknowledged artistic genius of world cinema, recognized by the influential generation of artists and moviegoers.

The themes of his films were much influenced by his childhood incidents and experiences.

His genius was essentially pantomimic, ideally suited to the silent cinema era. Chaplin's early comedies used extreme physical comedy and exaggerated gestures. But his pantomime was subtler. The visual gags were pure fun. The tramp character would aggressively assault his enemies with kicks and bricks. People loved him though critics warned that his comedy bordered on vulgarity.

During the period of 1918 to 1922, he made films like A Dog's Life, The Kid, The Idle Class and The Pilgrim. After some short films like Essanay, Mutual Film Corporation and First National he became involved in different facets of film making like acting, direction, and production. Some of his films were A Woman of Paris (1923), The Gold Rush (1925), and The Circus (1928). He also made the masterpieces City Lights (1931), as well as Modern Times (1936). Though they were silent films they were immensely popular and had his own music and sound effects. City Lights was by far his most balanced film, dealing with comedy and sentiments.

His talkies made in Hollywood included The Great Dictator (1940), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), and Limelight (1952). While Modern Times (1936) is a non-talkie, it contains dialouges coming from inanimate objects such as a radio. The reason behind this was that during the period of silent films the viewers were not accustomed to the concept of listening to dialogues as well as watching a performance simultaneously. In fact, The Circus (1928) was the first film where Chaplin's voice was heard.

The Circus tells the story of a failing circus which recruits the little tramp who bursts into the tent's center ring and wows the audience. The circus owner discovers he is only funny when he isn't trying to be so. He tricks The Little Tramp into joining the circus as a prop man who wreaks havoc with whatever he does and who unknowingly becomes the star of the show.

The Gold Rush is one of his best works. The Little Tramp is a prospector who has ventured into Alaska in the search of his fortune. He gets involved with some quite frightening characters, while falling in love with a beautiful girl called Georgia. The Gold Rush has beautiful cinematography moments.

City Lights is considered his own child. He wrote the screenplay and set the music and also directed, produced and edited this classic movie. Made in 1931, City Lights was made as a film with no speech. The movie is about the ups-and-downs of the Little Tramp, in love with a girl who thinks him to be someone else.

Modern Times is a glorious film that is probably as relevant today as it was in 1936. The film makes incredibly clever use of sound with its rather sophisticated sound effects. Modern Times explores the dehumanization of labour. The film then goes on to describe the closure of the factories, reflecting on the Great Depression in the economy of US at that period.

The Great Dictator is much darker than most other comedies. It is a film with a serious message with satirical overtones. The Great Dictator explores the rising Nazi threat during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Collin soon joins Special Investigation Unit. Captain Ellerby works hard with the team to destroy Frank Costello.

Another Special Investigation unit works undercover and asks Billya a criminal by family history to join it and assist the unit to permeate Frank's gang. Frank is imprisoned. With the help of his family he contacts Mr. Franch (Ray Winstone). His loyal right hand Billy actually is with Frank's team working undercover and Collin, on Special Investigation unit, remains in constant communication with Frank. Frank and his team kill people and Frank is a proud and dangerous extremist. Soon it was realized by both the teams that there was a vicious character in their ranks.

Sir Alfred Hitchcock was born on 13 August 1899 in Leytonstone, London. He was the son of East End greengrocer William Hitchcock. He was knighted in 1980, and died in the same year. Alfred Hitchcock had a long and extremely productive career making extremely [popular mystery, suspense and horror movies that all bore his distinctive trademarks. He was called the master of suspense.

Alfred Hitchcock has directed several suspense films in the long span of his career and almost all the films were successful. Thus once he said that even his failures make money and become classics a year after he makes them. Such was his confidence in his films.

He is one of the stalwart Hollywood directors who gave suspense thrillers a new dimension. Movies by Alfred Hitchcock range from the irrefutable masterpieces and minor classics to astonishing experiments in the language of film. His first movie was The Pleasure Garden released in 1925. Now let us consider some of the best works of Alfred Hitchcock.

The first Hitchcock film that comes to our mind is Rear Window that came out in 1954. It is about Jeff, a photograoher, who quite unexpectedly finds out that his neighbor is actually the murderer of his own wife. His girl friend Lisa Fremont and his nurse Stella help him in his quest for solving the mystery.

The second one has to be Vertigo made in the year 1958. In this movie John Scottie Ferguson, played by James Stewart, is a retired San Francisco police detective who suffers from acrophobia. Madeleine is the lady, played by Kim Novak, who leads him to high places. A wealthy shipbuilder who is an acquaintance from college days approaches Scottie and asks him to follow his beautiful wife, Madeleine. He fears she has gone insane and can even contemplate suicide, because she believes a dead ancestor possesses her. Madeline dies mysteriously. Later, Scottie meets Judy, played by Kim Novak, who reminds him of Madeleine.

The third Hitchcock movie is North by Northwest made in the year 1959. The film is about a middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill, played by Cary Grant. He is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures and is pursued across the States by both the spies and the government. He is wrongly accused of murder and becomes an innocent man on the run, on the way falling for an icy blonde played by Eva Marie Saint. They attempt to stop the diabolical Philip Vandamm, played by James Mason, from getting government secrets out of the country.

The fourth movie is Psycho made in the year 1960. Psycho is a masterpiece of suspense and horror. Marion Crane is a Phoenix, Arizona working girl who runs away with $40,000 and her lover to start a new life. While on flight they stop over a motel where they meet Norman Bates, a peculiar man dominated by his invalid mother. Murderous psychos have never got any scarier than Norman Bates. And the shower scene is the most terrifying scene ever done in a film.

Movie Review: Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2

Now, I am probably about 15 years older than the girls in this movie, and I am a man. Fortunately, I had no trouble empathizing with the four young women who are bound to friendship through their magical bifurcated nether garment(fancy word for pants) -- more so than I did with the Sex and the City gang, who are much closer to my age, but still, 180 Degrees different from my gender.

Like Sex and the City, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 works better if you know the characters already through their previous appearances, because you're already emotionally invested in them. I hadn't read the young-adult novels by Ann Brashares, but my sister, who is a big fan, filled me in and we determined that this movie is based mostly on the fourth book in the series, with a few changes, so even if you've read the books you get some surprises. Don't think that you are at a loss if you have not read any of the novels, as you are still able to get a good understanding of each character, and the story lines are easy to follow.

The chief problem is the four-part storyline, which, like the first film, finds the main characters separated for the summer and keeping in touch by sending back and forth the "magical pants" remember bifurcated nether garments? that fits all four of them. Be prepared to follow this movie along the four different storylines. This time it's the summer after freshman year of college for the girls, and while Carmen (America Ferrera) plans to spend the break at home with her pals, the others have bigger plans. Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) sticks around NYU to work at a video store and work on her screenplay, Bridget (Blake Lively) treks off to an archaeological dig in Turkey, and Lena (Alexis Bledel) takes a figure drawing class in Rhode Island.

A pair of secondhand jeans inset with rhinestones plays a major role in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2." Anyone who saw the first movie or read the novels that inspired the films will be familiar with these well-worn bottoms. They serve as a bond among four girlfriends. Each can magically squeeze into them, although the pals are different sizes and shapes.

Their lives, already starting to pull apart in the first "Pants," rip apart further in this thoroughly engaging sequel, which has some gems of wisdom to impart but does so gently. With one year of college now over, the girls are on the cusp of becoming full blown grown ups. Holding on to the past is difficult when the future keeps intruding. To remind themselves of what they had together as best friends, they mail the gritty jeans to one another at various summer ports of call.

During their summers, the four women deal with issues of trust, love, guilt, and value. Partially due to their separate adventures, and partially due to their increased independence and individuality, the girls primarily go through their journeys of discovery on their own, and develop their own independence. At times, the increased separation between them is obviously apparent. At others, it becomes an opening for a strong cast of supporting characters/mentors to shine. But at the end of the day, the girls prove that while there are certain things they must discover on their own, they will always be there for each other and to provide that kind of guidance and support that a tight bond can only do.

Most impressing was that these women seemed to come away from their challenges stronger, wiser, and, for the most part, in places better than where they were before. At the end, you get the sense that they actually are in healthy relationships, that they have learned from their mistakes, and that love and friendship have in fact triumphed over selfishness and isolation.

And while there's an element of fantasy to much of the movie, serious issues, including teen pregnancy and mental illness, lurk beneath the cinematic sheen.

Like its predecessor, "Sisterhood 2" is based on two radical ideas: namely, that young women's stories are about more than the pursuit of men, and that happiness isn't something that you are given, or is something that is external. It is inside you, and you need to find it for yourself.

This is a great teen movie, or even a great mother daughter movie to wind up the Summer with. With a strong cast and engaging story line, "Sisterhood 2" is a wonderful second spin around the block.

Pineapple Express Movie Review: Thumbs up?

In the tradition of your best lovable buddies, Cheech & Chong, Reyn and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, Pinky and the Brain, comes "Pineapple Express," a stoner comedy that partakes of the lovable comaradarie that buddies share, not to mention a few bong hits, before hitting the hard stuff for a major John Woo action-style blowup.

If you think you've seen this movie before, you probably have caught its multiple inspirations. It was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who took their own adolescent antics and gave us "Superbad," a charming smutfest about three hormonally freaked-out teenage boys. In some respects "Pineapple Express" plays out like the follow up to but a nastier version of the previous shoot em up, growing up, "Super Bad."

Rogen plays Dale Denton, a process server who eases the tension of serving subpoenas upon unsuspecting victims by being stoned as much as possible. Throughout the early moments of the film we see Dale dressing in a variety of costumes as he carries out his job serving folks subpoenas, divorce papers and other varieties of unwanted legal documents. It is an early source for comedy and it is used wisely and sparingly. His final drop for the night is with a man named Ted (Gary Cole) who ironically turns out to be Saul's bud supplier. The thing is Saul's bud is so potent and special, that it can easily be traced back to the user.

So when Dale is the only witness to a murder in Ted's living room involving a crooked cop, Ted and brains splattered all over the window he forgets his delivery and high-tails it out of there. In "Pineapple Express," as it happens, the getting of the ultimate joint is never as thorny as the disposing of it. In his haste to leave the scene he is seen and his abandoned roach becomes a link back to Saul as Ted recognizes the strain he sold Saul, and Saul alone. Saul's revered pineapple express is so rare, remember, that it is easily traceable back to its smoker.

This becomes a vexing issue for Dale when he leaves a roach behind at the scene of a crime he has just witnessed, the murder of an Asian crime boss at the hands of a corrupt cop ( Rosie Perez) and her drug lord lover (Gary Cole). Our boys are on the run and our film has a plot.

Finding himself a gangland target, Dale efficiently implicates his high-school-aged girlfriend Angie (Amber Heard), her parents ( Ed Begley Jr. and Nora Dunn) and the epically out-of-it Saul.

The strange thing about the film though is when they called it an action comedy, they weren't kidding. While the action is mostly played for laughs, it's also cool on its own, and pretty hardcore, make no mistake this is a hard R movie. For example remember that scene in Kill Bill where Uma Thurman and Vivaca Fox turn her living room into dust. There's a scene like that in Pineapple Express, at the house of a nigh indestructible drug middle man named Red who damn near steals the movie, except that the fight spirals out into different rooms onto different floors escalating in madness until a pitch perfect beat involving a bathroom sink threatens to cause you to herniated with laughter and squirm in your seat at the same time.

Taking producer and story credit roles is Judd Apatow, a man that after 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up could do no wrong. Then after he produced Superbad it seemed there was no failing. Raunchy humor seemed to be the big appeal. The thing is dick and fart jokes are starting to wear on audiences just as did torture porn... and quickly.

People will enjoy this film, it isn't a movie anyone should really walk out of disappointed. The finale pretty much guarantees you should walk away happy as it is easily the best part of the production, but that doesn't mean its early faults should be overlooked. The film had alot of media and build up since last year, so there should be alot of audience for the film, but it will be interesting to see if it will rise up to any kind of critical acclaim that "Knocked Up" and "The Forty Year Old Virgin" received. Overall, the movie is average, and if you've had a little of your own pineapple express before seeing the movie, then you should enjoy it just fine.
