The Magic Of Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood was born in San Francisco with an English, Scottish and Dutch ancestry. He began his career with some B-grade films such as Francis in the Navy, and Revenge of the Creature. The world knows him as an icon, and a living legend who started his career as an actor but later on reached great heights of popularity and sweet success. He appeared for the first time as a star in a feature film called Ambush at Cimmaron Park.

In 1959, he became a household name with the television series Rawhide. With the release of the film The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, where Eastwood played the role of a hunter, he actually came up with a new image. By this time, people had already started recognizing him as an international star though still with the same tough look.

In the year, 1971, Siegel came up with his production Company, Malpaso. This incident became a turning point in the life of Eastwood. The first ever movie where the audience saw their superstar in the most promising role was Dirty Harry, which also became a huge box office hit and was also critically acclaimed. The thriller Play Misty for Me, which was released in 1971, also gave him a chance to show off his talents and mesmerize the audience with his directorial abilities while starring in the same film too. High Plains Drifter and Outlaw Josey Wales are the two allegorical Westerns by Eastwood. His collaboration with Siegel ended with the movie Escape from Alcatraz.

The decade of the 1980s did not witness much of Clint Eastwood though Pale Rider in 1985 paid homage to the Western Film Classic and became a part of the Cannes Film Festival.

After 1990, people once again witnessed the most promising and critically acclaimed box office hit, Unforgiven. The movie had other stalwarts like Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris. It was a landmark in Clint Eastwood's career, which bagged him the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture. The film was nominated for 9 Oscars.

In 2000, Clint Eastwood worked in films like Blood Work and directed some all-time hits like Mystic River, Flags of Our Father and Letter from Iwo and Jima.

His originality and uniqueness can also be garnered from the fact that he is the only one who has been nominated for both Best Actor and Best Director for the same film (Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby). Clint Eastwood won the Golden Globe award for Best Director Motion Picture in 1989 for Bird and Academy award for Unforgiven (Best Director) in 1992. In the history of Hollywood along with Francis Ford Coppola and Milos Forman, Eastwood also directed two Best Picture winners.

In 2007, Eastwood became the first recipient of the Jack Humanitarian award. Apart from the Academy and Golden Globe awards, he has also achieved Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award in 2003 as well as the Hank award by the Henri Mancini Institute. With a career spanning four decades, he has touched all the forms of filmmaking. Clint Eastwood is the ultimate Cowboy hero who actually reinvented the form in his own unique style. An amazing actor, he even tried his hands in direction with some remarkable movies like Play Misty for Me, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven. Evolving from an actor to a producer in his most prolific and versatile way was Clint Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood has starred in about 25 films, appeared in 57, directed 25 and produced 20. He is not only an icon and a living legend but also an institution by himself. It seems that there is no end to the creativity of this tight-lipped and low-key person. Currently he is busy directing The Changeling, a period thriller by Universal Pictures expected to release in 2008.

Hollywood Comedy Movies - From Charlie Chaplin To Jim Carrie

Comedy movies started long back in the 1900s. The first movie to be produced was by Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope. This could also be considered the first to show the comic aspect of a movie. Comedy films began to appear more during the era of silent films, prior to the 1930s. These comedy movies were originally based on visual humor. The prominent figure that we all know as Charlie Chaplin was one of the famous clown-style actors of the silent era. It was through Charlie Chaplin that Hollywood comedy movies became famous. Soon came Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd.

Then in the 1920s came another trend, of animated cartoons. They were the most popular Hollywood comedy movies of the time. Several popular characters of that era were Felix the cat, Krazy Kat and Betty Boop. However, the popularity of these movies was hindered due to lack of sound and color.

By the end of 1920s, the Hollywood comedy industry showed a change brought about by the introduction of sound into movies. This allowed the industry to create dramatic new film styles and use verbal humor. Those films soon replaced silent movies. They used dialogues by comedians such as W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers. Charlie Chaplin was the last comedian to have acted in a silent film, and his films during 1930s were without dialogue, although they did employ sound effects.

When the United States entered into World War II, Hollywood movies changed their course to themes related to conflicts and Hollywood comedy movies also inclined to military themes. The war era experienced a boom, when due to the restriction on traveling, nearly a quarter of the money spent was spent on movies.

In the 1950s, interest shifted to social situations or family-oriented comedies. During that period the number of Hollywood comedy films declined. The 1960s saw an increasing number of broad, star-packed comedies. In 1970, Hollywood comedy movies reflected the anti-war sentiment which was prevailing then. Amongst the leading figures of this time were Woody Allen and Mel Brooks. They wrote, directed and appeared in their own movies.

In the 1980s, the gag based comedy Airplane, a spoof of the previous decade disaster film series, was released and Hollywood comedy movies followed suit for more of the same including Top Secret and the Naked Gun films. The popular comedians of that time included Dudley Moore, Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. Jim Carrey, the Canadian actor, came into Hollywood comedy movies in the late 1980s when he won a role in Damian Lee Canadian's skiing comedy, Copper Mountain.

The most popular Hollywood comedy movies were of John Hughes, which included Ferris Bueller's Day Off and the Home Alone series of 1990s. The latter focused more on a family audience. That showed a revival in comedy movies. Spoof comedy movies have remained popular till date.

Another development in Hollywood comedy movies was the use of gross humor, which is usually aimed at the younger audience, in films like, There's Something about Mary, American Pie and many more. This trend of gross movies continued with adult oriented comedies picking up the box office for some time more.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Movie Review- Three's a Crowd

Killing a mummy may prove difficult to do, but the makers of the third installment of the Mummy movies proves you can kill a franchise. Not to mention, this movie, which sports a father son story line, very much repeats in the same fashion as the tired Indiana Jones movie just out.

While there are some redeeming qualities, those of which star the Asian powerhouse team of Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, the "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" is tired, and lack luster. While the special effects and the action are elevated, the over all pace and feel of the move is tired.

Taking place seven years after the second installment "The Mummy Returns," the film takes place in China with Rick played by Fraser battling a massive army of terra cotta soldiers led by the Dragon Emperor, played by Jet Li. The Emporer was cursed into suspended animation by a beautiful sorceress, played by Yeoh. This movie incidentally has no mummies in it.

Aside from some very cool CGI special effects, the story line proves to be a rehash of formula, and the talents of Li and Yeoh are undeniably wasted.

The movie starts with Rick O'Connell living the domestic life, retired from the archeological life, is too easily persuaded to help Rick's brother in law Johathan and son Alex whom are in Shang hai. The two have stumbled upon the long sought after tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The story is complete with a magic elixir, a secret stone, and only one way to kill the Dragon Emperor. While they try to revive some of the former magic of the American bravado, the film still comes up short, as old tricks die hard.

While Fraser is only able to revive the original charm of the original character, he is drowned out by too many feature actors. Monica Bello, who replaced Rachel Weisz ( can you say Oscar?) seems to modern to be playing in a period piece, and does not do action very well. Ford, as Alex, is on the annoying side, and only time will tell whether it was the role or the actor.

As for Li, he only appears in human form in the beginning of the movie and at the end. There really is not much screen time where you get to appreciate him, as the majority of the movie is covered by a CG Emperor. Both Asian actors do not benefit from the highly scripted characters or the heavy costuming.

They say that the third time is a charm, but in this case, three's a crowd. Special effects alone cannot make a movie. When will they learn that flash is no substitute for a good story line? The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor starts August 1, 2008.

Swing Vote Movie Review: Are Americans That Dumb?

In "Swing Vote," Kevin Costner plays Bud Johnson, a newly unemployed factory worker whose well intentioned young daughter, Molly (Madeline Carroll), insists that he vote in the presidential election. The movie starts out with Bud going out on election nite, getting drunk and passing out. Not being able to get to the polling station, Molly decides to illegally cast a vote in Bud's name, at which point the voting machine malfunctions. Bud's cast vote is thus not counted and becomes the deciding vote in the nations most hotly contested election.

The thing is, Costner, is not too good at playing dumb. An underrated actor whose all-American good looks always seem to be hiding the talents of intelligence and reserve. Costner comes across as much too self-aware to be playing this ballcap-wearing, belly-scratching nimrod. Think back to the movies, "The Upside of Anger" and "Mr. Brooks." In all actuality, Costner appears to be about 10 years too old for this role, and you left asking if they just couldn't find someone younger.

Other problems have to do with the movies character who supposedly doesn't know the difference between pro choice, and pro life. He doesn't even know who's running. But when NASCAR legend Richard Petty shows up outside his door to campain for the Republican candidate, Bud looks like a little kid who just got a pony at Christmas. What does this say about the stero type of middle America? Americans aren't that dumb.

Once the two candidates learn that Bud will be able to cast his vote again in 10 days, the two candidates, played by Kelsy Grammer and Dennis Hopper quickly come to the town of Texico, where Bud lives in a trailer. Wasted talents also include Stanley Tucci and Nahtan Lane who play the candidates slimey campaign managers.

Basically, textbook Hollywood fodder, "Swing Vote" does not take any sides, and pulls all the regular punches...That the candidates are hollow and will flip flop on a position at the drop of a dime in order to appeal to Bud.

The movies two underlying themes are that a father must learn to appreciate the importance of family, and civic duty. While noteworthy, the film does have a tendency to take itself too seriously, and also takes a wild detour when Bud's daughter decides to find her mentally unstable mother.

The movies climax and ending concludes with Bud casting his vote. But, the premise the Bud follows to cast his vote is so felonious and absurd, that you are left shaking your head at the rediculousness of the scene.
