Guidelines For Writing Movie Reviews

A movie review gives indication as to whether or not others will find the movie worth watching. The purpose of most movie reviews is to help the reader in determining whether they want to watch, rent or buy the movie. The review should also give enough details about the movie so that the reader can make an up-to-date decision as to whether to watch the movie or not. At the same time, the review should not give away too much of the essential plot of the story.

In this article we will be discussing the guidelines that should be followed while writing a movie review. Before starting to write a review, the writer should remember the following procedure:

- Selecting the movie
- Knowing the context of the movie, such as it's director, actors, story and many more
- Formulating the writers opinion in one sentence
- Selecting special scenes from the movie or other facts that will support the writer's opinion.

The first step in writing the review is to watch the movie. Most movie reviewers take notes as they watch the movie. Watching the movie a second time helps to absorb a lot more detail about the movie. Most movie reviewers give their personal opinion of the movie in their review. In all good journalism, the reviewer should always give impartial details, and allow the reader to make their own opinion as well.

Reviewer's opinions should be explained to allow the reader to determine whether the readers would agree or not. The reviewer also needs to consider the audience. Writing a movie review for children requires a different approach than if writing for a general movie audience. The review should always be written keeping the targeted audience in mind. The main essence of the movie should be retained in an outlined sketch -- but it should always be remembered not to give away any essential details like surprises or a sudden turn in the plot.

Details of actors, crew members, directors should be mentioned in the review. It should also be mentioned how well they have acted and how well the movie has been made technically. The technicalities are an important part of the movie review. Technicalities include art direction, music, editing lighting, cinematography and many more.

Movie reviews even include a little bit of criticism if needed. Criticism says what could have been done to make the film better or what the weak points of the movie are. Though critical analysis is not always needed, a word or two can serve the purpose in a movie review.

Conclusion

A reviewer must always remember to give an outline of the whole story, but not give away details which hold surprises or the special essence of the film. It should be kept untold for the audience to watch the film. The movie review should be written keeping a note of the types of readers who would be reading the review. The language, presentation and technicalities of writing would also depend on the types of readers. The medium which the review will be published is also important, because if the review is published on the net, the reviewer will get mostly youth readers. However, if it is going to be published in a local language in a local daily newspaper, then the approach should be different.

Italian Neo Realistic Films and Its History

Neo realism is actually a term used to describe theatre style, and it means new realism. This conception of 'new reality' first started in Italy. This new idea redefined the whole perception of modernism.

After the First World War, Italy was going through a very frustrating time. Everything was shattered in a place otherwise so rich in culture. Films were not a mere exception. Italian neo realistic films emerged as an after effect of this social and political unrest.

The Italian film industry was going through a very tough time. All of the studios were broken and damaged; they did not have sufficient money to budget for film making. The renowned and crafty directors started to relocate to Hollywood. During this horrible time, Italian neo realistic films emerged.

In the post World War one period, people of Italy were searching for a medium through which they could raise their voices. There is a proven theory that art movement can unite people more than any other type of protest. Italy proved this fact once again.

Directors like Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica emerged and they showed their new weapon, not only to Italy, but also to the whole world.

The first among the neo realistic films of Italy was Quattro passi tra le nuvole, which translates to 'Four steps in the clouds', by Alessandro Blasetti in the year 1942. But this was just the beginning. Italian neo realistic films started to become popular with directors like, vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, etc.

Rossellini made Rome Open City or Roma Citta Aperta in the year 1945, which became one of the milestone films of neo realism. This film depicts the brutal torture of the Nazis on Italians. He also made two more world-class neo realistic films, Paisa and Germania Anno Zero. The compilation of these three films is called the 'Trilogy of Rossellini'.

But, most probably the most famous neo realistic film, is 'Bicycle Thief' or 'Ladri di Biciclette' by Vittorio De Sica. This film was released in the year 1948.

The largest portion of this film was shot outdoors. The most interesting thing is that no professional actor was used in this film, and surprisingly, the lead character, Ricci, played by Lamberto Maggiorani was not at all a professional actor.

The story tells about an unemployed man who gets a job, and through turn of events he gets his bicycle stolen. The story spins on his helplessness and how quickly the search for his bike changes his life.

This film very artistically depicts the problems of a common person and how society victimizes him.

The most touching point of this film is the climax, when the little boy, Bruno watches his father get bitten by the mob after stealing a bicycle. At that point the story does not just tells the story of a single man, but of another story of a new bicycle thief.

This film throws a question to the society: 'who is responsible for giving birth to a criminal?' Actually, many Italian neo realistic films dealt with such social issues.

Some other very famous Italian neo realistic films are, Sciuscia a.k.a. shoeshine, 1946, Miracolo a Milano a.k.a Miracle in Milan, 1950, Umberto D, 1952. Umberto D was the last film of this Italian neo realistic films genre.

Citizen Cane

By many, Citizen Kane is one of the greatest films off all time. Orson Wells, at age 25, produced, and starred in this film. Citizen Kane is a memorable film for limitless reasons. The film brought about controversy because it fictionalized the life of William Randolph Hearst, a powerful newspaper publisher. The film draws remarkable parallels with his life and his relationship with his mistress. There is also speculation that the film is loosely based on Wells' life as well. This movie tells the fascinating story of the life and death of Charles Foster Kane, a narcissistic newspaper runner, politician, and a wealthy millionaire. What makes this movie spectacular is not only the acting of the actors, but the symbolism and cinematic effects. The techniques used by the cinematographer brought this film to life. This is what sets Citizen Kane apart from other films.

Symbolism has an enormous role in this film. "Rosebud" is the last word uttered by Cane. He then dies and takes his secret to the death. The film follows one reporter on his search to the truth. Throughout the film, the tragic existence of powerful newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane, becomes apparent. He spends most of his life in solitude. Although he was married twice, he always stayed alone. This was because of his incapacity of felling love, which was caused by his insecure childhood. Kane was unwillingly taken away from his mother as a young child; this single event molded Kane into the narcissistic man he became. The only time Kane felt safe was when he was under the care of his mother. She was the only person he ever was able to show feelings for. This hugely affected his relationships with women, as well as people in general. All of the women in his life leave him behind in some way. His last word before he died was "rosebud," the name of the sled he was riding before his was ripped away from his family. "Rosebud" was not merely a sled, it was much more than that. His happiness lied in that single materialistic object. The sled represents his innocence and carefree happiness of childhood. His last happy memory was when he was playing on his sled. This was the last time Kane felt true happiness and love. When he got older, Kane equated money and power for love. He tried to demand love by smothering the people closest to him. It did not work; it actually caused feelings of hatred and anger towards him. He tried to use his money and his business to control his life. Despite his power and wealth, his life ends in failure. He tried to buy love and happiness but he never achieved either. The key to his failure can be found in his childhood, or his lack of a childhood.

Another aspect of the film that made it brilliant is the diverse techniques of the camera. Many people consider Citizen Kane to be the greatest film ever made, and for its time it probably was. Although technology today is by far more advanced than what existed when this movie was made, the cinematographer of Citizen Kane probably catered to the story better by simplistic camera shots, rather than the overdone special effects used today. The use of the camera in this film can either enhance the whole experience, or just confuse the audience. To fully appreciate this film, a person must really pay attention. The use of the camera was just as significant as the lines spoken. From just the first few minutes of the movie, the director sets the mood of the film by the numerous scene transitions. Throughout the duration of the film, there were a few points where the scene transitions and changes of camera angles almost had a chaotic effect. I think this is done purposely to parallel the chaos in Kane's life at certain points throughout the film. Other camera techniques that made the film as great as it is are the unconventional lighting, the use of shadows, and the variety of camera angles used. The director used the camera to project the frenzy that was going on in Kane's head.

Citizen Kane is known as one of the greatest films ever made. I don't know if I would agree completely, but I can see why it receives as much praise as it does. This film broke barriers of film for its time. The film consisted of great acting, plot, symbolism, and cinematography. It had all the components of a great film. In the future, I am sure there will be films that surpass this one, but I think Citizen Kane will always be remembered for the barriers it broke.

What is movie and movie history

Movie is a term that encompasses individual motion pictures, the field of movie as an art form, and the motion picture industry. Movies are produced by recording images from the world with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or special effects.

Movies are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Movie is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment, and a powerful method for educating - or indoctrinating - citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication; some movies have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue.

Traditional Movies are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.

The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) had historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, photo-play, flick, and most commonly, movie. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema, and the movies.
