Going To College: What The Great Debaters And How She Move Have In Common

Can the movies The Great Debaters and How She Move share a moral? I think so. Both movies cover young people making changes in their lives and trying to get ahead. One movie is Oscar quality - The Great Debaters. The other, How She Move, falls more in the after school special quality arena.

But both have a valuable message, and what is it? Stay in school. Finish your education. Make a difference by becoming an asset to your community.

The Great Debaters
This movie should win some great awards. It deals with the Jim Crowe conditions that blacks faced during the depression, and the difficulty of living at that time. It shows that many worked toward a future that would end those problems for future generations.

By following the debate team from Wiley College, you see the hope of strong willed people willing to work for a better future. You find a dedicated professor, Melvin Tolson, played by Denzel Washington, teaching a new debate team how to prepare, address a crowd, persuade, write, and even promote their winning team. Also, you see young college students become adults, ready to help their community and improve their country.

Based on a true story, the debate team wins repeatedly, escapes a lynch mob, and overcomes personal demons to succeed. Professor Tolson works to improve his students, but also his community. One of the finest moments in this film occurs after he has been arrested for attempting to form a union.

Tolson's friend and an administrator at Wiley College, James Farmer Sr., persuades the local sheriff (played by John Heard) to let Tolson go home, and avoid a riot. Dr. Farmer's son, Junior, watches this exchange. He realizes that he has witnessed a great debate, a real one. Not like the staged debates he has been party to on the team, this one can end in peace for their town or real bloodshed. It is a stirring moment.

At the end of the movie, this same young man shows he has come of age as he argues a point in a debate. He shows he has mastered his education, but even more, that he has grasped that it is real, not just learning from a book.

This movie teaches that with a good education, you can become an asset to your community. You can change the world. The money for college that you need does not amount to much, and you can find a way to finish and make a difference.

How She Move
Why would How She Move have anything in common with The Great Debaters? Both of them illustrate that an education can make a huge difference in our society, and in your future contribution. You can overcome even great odds to go to college and earn a degree.

Finding the money to go to college is a short term problem. Earning a degree offers a long term distinction that will serve you your whole life. In How She Move, the main character, played by Tre Armstrong, needs to earn money to go to college.

And if you've seen the trailer, you may think that she uses her wiles to do it. Not the case. How She Move has a few dance scenes, but nowhere near as many as Take the Lead, Dirty Dancing, or other similar movies. The film limits itself to step dancing, which usually happens as a team of men or women with choreographed moves.

In the end, she still needs to earn money for college. To make ends meet, she joins the underdog step team in her neighborhood and tries to shake up their plans. When the team hits a set back (another team cracks their steps, in other words copies them) she can finally help them excel. And she does it without drugs, too.

In a sense, both of these movies show that you can come from anywhere and make a difference. You can start with nothing and become a force for good or at least rise above the problems around you. Granted, one does it with flair and drama. The Great Debaters is a must see, but you can still learn something from the other as well.

And if you need money for college but don't know your FAFSA from the EFC, come to Beat-Tuition.com to learn how to earn credits cheap and download my free short report on financial aid.

The Art Of Editing A Movie

Editing a movie can be referred to as tailoring a movie. Just as people don't want to wear ill-fitting clothes, similarly no viewer is ready to see an unedited movie. An unedited movie is not compact, brief or tight, so it does not lure the spectators. The art of editing a movie means arrangement of shots according to an understandable viewpoint so that the viewers can derive aesthetic pleasure.

In cinema, generally two techniques are followed, viz., mise-en-scene and montage. Mise-en-scene refers to the composition part of movie making or in other words, whatever is being shot with the single switch-on of the camera till the single switch-off of the camera. Whereas, the editing style and technique are known as montage.

Some years ago, editing a movie was a difficult as well as a lengthy task when the films were shot in celluloid. Edit actually means 'cut' and the editors sliced the unwanted strip from the master roll and used to paste all the perfect shots into one. However, a duplicate of the master, known as dupe print, is used for all the experimentation. The viewable celluloid is prepared through such a rigorous process.

This was the time of linear editing. However, computers have provided the scope of non-linear editing. It is generally known that when the movie is shot, it is much more lengthily than what we actually see in the cinema hall. The unedited footage is known as 'rush'.

All the unwanted and NG shots have to be edited from the film to give you the compact film. Therefore, it can be said that editing a movie is an art and the editors need to perfect the art with dedication and practice.

A good editor is able to play with the emotions of the viewers. While editing the shots, the sound which was 'synced' or recorded with the shots like the ambiance noise, needs to be edited or else a re-recording of the sound is needed.

Here the editor gets the scope of creating artificial things. Some practice folly, where the object is actually thrown and then the sound is recorded. Editing is the post-production stage of movie making and since it is one of the vital stages, poor editing can mar a good movie.

Many people believe that a movie is made on the editing table, as everything from the effect of lightning and thunder to the squeaking of a mouse is available. Shots are built up, as not every shot is a key shot. While editing, the shots are arranged so that the weaker shots act as parasite to the stronger ones and sometimes editing hides the mistakes made in the production stage.

It can be said that the argument between the linear and non-linear editing is often subjective. Whatever the type, editing a movie is not the selection of shots but the right collection of shots and presentable summary of the shots.

A Brief History Of Hollywood Movies

In the 1880s, the American stage was dominated by 'Vaudeville shows', which were cherished by the residents of North America. Being the primitive genre of variety entertainment, these shows differed from burlesque. As entrepreneurs started experimenting with their movie-making skills, these shows lost all of their glory. Here, achievement of the film, 'The Great Train Robbery' is noteworthy.

In 1910, director D.W.Griffith, with his troop, started filming in downtown Los Angeles. While searching for a more apt location, they found it in a village that was miles northward -- 'Hollywood'. The first movie shot by Griffith in Hollywood was 'In Old California', a melodrama of California. Thorough research work identifies a number of points that ushered the beginning of Hollywood movies. But, it was Griffith's 'Birth Of A Nation', which was the pioneering endeavor that whistled a never-ending journey of American cinema.

Gradually, with the growth of Hollywood industry, films were exhibited in Nicholodeon halls. Ambitious people on the production side emerged as the controlling heads of movie studios. They aided the internationalization of films to reduce America-centric provincialism. At the zenith of its popularity, the industry produced about 400 movies a year, with an audience of 90,000,000 Americans per week.

The American studios, however, confronted major difficulties when their sound productions were rejected in various foreign language markets. Also, the synchronization technique was too primitive. Around the 1930s, parallel language versions of films were produced to provide a befitting solution to the problem. With rapid advancement of synchronization, dubbing also became more realistic.

During the Golden Age of Hollywood (1920-1950), the film industry was at the peak of its success. Adherence to the formula of western slapstick comedy, musical animated cartoons contributed to it. The same creative team worked on films made by the same studio. The most renowned studios were Warner Bros., MGM, RKO, etc. Each studio had its own specialized characteristics, a trait not seen today. Each film was unique in its own flavor, since the moviemakers were all artists and creative people. The release of classics that enriched the industry, were 'WUTHERING HEIGHTS', 'GONE WITH THE WIND', 'CASABLANCA' and such other timeless masterpieces. In the late 1940's, the separation of the production of films from their exhibition and the advent of television led to the decline of the studio system.

The postclassical cinema gave birth to directors from a new school of thought. They introduced new filming techniques and strategies and developed upon the prevailing ones. Films like 'JAWS', 'GODFATHER', 'PSYCHO', and other modern blockbusters' have no doubt added a new dimension to Hollywood. With independent films, another new generation of moviemakers became focused as they made films that were often innovative, critical, unconventional, and contradictory. However, for their considerable financial success and crossover into popular culture, they have become a very influential part of Hollywood mainstream films.

With the passage of generations, directors with their exclusive style and innovations have come up with intellectually stimulating and thought provoking creations, making the history of Hollywood movies interesting as well as amazing.

Magic Of The Old Classic Movies

Old Classic movies never lose their charm. They are evergreen and never go out of style. The magic of old Classic movies remain in the hearts of million of fans forever. Old classic movies are generally personal favorites of many people. It becomes really difficult to choose some of the films from the vast ocean of creativity. Style and creativity team up together to make a movie classic. We will discuss a few old classic movies here.

Let's start with an all time favorite classic film, "Ben Hur". This is an epic movie, brilliantly made with effects and styles. The expensive sets and costumes make the film grander. The fighting scenes are immortal and it is a favorite with all ages. Charlton Heston played the title role and did an excellent job. Yule Breyner was as good and as wicked as ever. The grandeur of the Roman Empire has bewitched viewers all over the entire world.

Another film which is a real Classic, happens to be 'The Sound Of Music". An adjective will be inadequate to describe this brilliantly awesome film. An all time legend in its own right, this film has been a favorite from generation to generation. Set in the backdrop of World War I the film was shot in beautiful Austria. The songs are legendary and the actors, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and those seven little children of Captain VonTrapp were awesome.

Another vintage has got be "Gone With The Wind". It is a classic tale of romance, starring Clarke Gable and vivacious Vivian Leigh. The immortal character of Reth Butler played By Clarke Gable makes the film everlasting. Vivian Leigh never looked so beautiful. The film was shot brilliantly in a far west location.

Old Classics include all the works of the great master Charlie Chaplin. The wackiest of comedies created with great mastery in the silent era will always be like the monuments, which stand still even in the most adversities. "Lime Light" and "Great Dictator" happen to be my personal favorite. The great master created some brilliant magic on the screen in adverse conditions and when there were practically very little gears, which are needed to make a film. Even without sound the master created something that makes the viewers speechless.

Another old classic movie is "Cleopatra". The title character was played by Elizabeth Taylor. Her husband Richard Burton also played an important role in this film. A nicely shot film in the backdrop of Roman Empire, the film is one of a kind. Ravishing Elizabeth created a history with her attire and look as Cleopatra. She looked stunning in the film and acted radiantly. The film was a huge success in the Box Office.

Lastly, a film, which needs to be mentioned while talking about old classics is "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" It is a very nice film to watch with lots of humorous scenes and nicely portrayed characters. It is a feel good movie with all the ingredients to make all the viewers happy and content at the end.

Indiana Jones is Back To Save Us

It seems that America must feel as if she has lost her way in 2008 At least you would think so if you looked at what our artists are presenting to us. They have come back to help us, indeed to lead us and get us thinking about what we can do and be if we can recover our can do spirit.

First, Rocky came back from the dead, from poverty, from old age to remind us of what really matters in life. We didn't bother engaging each other about the implausibility of a fifty year old getting in the ring with a twenty something. We didn't want to. We wanted to believe in Rocky because he (even though is just a fictional character) represents more to us. He is inspiration; he is our comeback kid. He is hard work, determination and most of all humility. When we go to see him in the movie, we are not interested in reality; and I dare say we are not all that interested in being entertained. Additionally, it is probably true that we are not all that interested in feeling good. We want to be inspired. We need to be inspired.

It stands to reason that not too long after that Rambo came back to let us know that the world belongs to the American with the tough exterior but heart of gold: velvet and steel. We dismiss the rampant violence in the movie; because again, we want inspiration. We are able to leave the news about mortgage crises, jobs going overseas and rising racial tension. We are able to see a good guy win. Even if he is misunderstood, as all of us think we are at some level. Rambo is everyman. He is, unlike us at many points, clear on his mission. He walks with the certainty that we need to walk during difficult times.

Finally, have you noticed that Indiana Jones is coming back too? He rescued us from the wrath of God, from evil men who threatened the divine balance and even from poverty in India.

He reminds of the lines between good and evil. We never really leave his side and we are with him in spirit in his adventures and we want him to win. We expect him to win. He has come back just in time. Heck, if we can't have Jack Bauer for a whole calendar year; who to save us but Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones is back, and he is welcome.
