All Time Favorite Movie Makers

Movie making is a work of art or a cultural show piece that reflects the cultural nuances of a certain generation and society. Compared to other forms of media, the film is a relatively new medium though it has already scaled great heights over the years. Films are a very powerful and influential means of educating people. A popular Chinese proverb says that 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. We can say that films are very effective in instructing and educating people.

The popularity of films easily spreads to their makers too. People identify certain films and the way they are made or the message they carry with that of the makers. Some all time favorite moviemakers are Alfred Hitchcock, D.W. Griffith, Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, Federico Fellini, Jean Renoir, Ingmar Bergman, and Akira Kurosawa.

The British born moviemaker cum producer, Alfred Hitchcock, is considered as the pioneer of suspense and thriller movies. He directed nearly sixty films whose time span ranged from the silent to the talkies era. Hitchcock is one of the best known and most popular of moviemakers of all time. The major elements of his movies are fear and fantasy where the protagonists are innocent people. They are shown as caught up in various circumstances that are mostly beyond their control and understanding.

In 1925 Alfred Hitchcock directed his first movie The pleasure Garden that was a major commercial success. Some of his other popular movies are Rebecca, Psycho, Dial M for Murder, The Man Who Knew Too Much, etc.

D.W. Griffith, often considered as the father of modern movie making, made over 450 short films. His movies consist of two parts. He was good at both story-telling as well as technical know how. He is best known for his controversial 1915 film The birth of a Nation. Through his mastery in editing, he invented and popularized the concept of cross cutting. In layman's terms, this means alternating between different events with the aim of building suspense. His cinematographer, Billy Bitzer, shares a lot of the credit for cinematic innovations. Some of his commercially successful movies are Broken Blossom, Way down East, and Orphans of the Storm.

Sergei Eisenstein was a revolutionary Soviet Russian film director known for his ground breaking use of montage. He believed that editing could be used for more than just clarifying a scene or a moment, or for establishing a linkage of a related scene. Though his films were silent they are still noted for their innovations. Some of his masterpieces are Strike, Battleship Potemkin, and Oktober.

The silent movies of Charlie Chaplin have the strange ability of talking to the audience. Hence, he is counted as one of the all time favorite moviemakers. He was one of the first Hollywood superstars who drew a record number of audiences to the theatres. We can say that his movies stood between entertainment for children and the seriousness of adults. His movies talked about social, political, and economic injustice, all in such an appealing way that it seemed less didactic and more entertaining.

In the movies of Jean Renoir, one glimpses the world of art and film mingled into each other. He engaged masterful visuals with the help of lighting, location, focus and camera angle that added a new and exciting dimension to the film. The well-known films of Renoir are The River, Diary of Chambermaid, and The Woman on the Beach.

The above lists tell us that these moviemakers have dared to break all the rules and take risks. They are therefore remembered and respected for what they did without bowing down to established notions, and traditional norms of filmmaking. Their work is a blend of creativity and a daring attitude that transforms them into all time favorite moviemakers.

A Breakthrough Strategy in Promoting Free Smileys

Contrary to what most people believed, promoting free smileys on the internet is tough job; in fact, it's Herculean task. These cute animated free smileys may be popular, but from the point of view of an internet marketer, this popularity is in itself the core of the marketing challenge. Try searching the more popular search engine for "free smileys" and your eyes would pop on 635,000 search engine results. To scale the summit of a search engine's top page, getting passed this huge number of competitors, one has to find a strategy that is "attention-friendly"; something that appeals not just to his niche, but impacts other online users, as well.

The movies!

Not to be outclassed or outlived by the media's frenzy over the multi-million gross receipts of "Dark Knight", a company that creates free smileys published online its free smileys versions of Batman and the Joker, making sure that its online users will have something to capture the movie with; a special free smiley icon that they can send in their emails or decorate the pages of their MySpace and Friendster accounts, or have something to remember by the brilliant performance of its fallen star, Heath Ledger, for months or even years after the movie has retired on DVD. Smart idea; what do you think?

And it seems it's not enough, recently, another smiley came up online; an unlikely hero, but has definitely captured moviegoers' hearts when it was first shown in theaters worldwide. Proof was its million-dollar receipts that catapulted it to one of Hollywood's top grosser's list in 2004: Hellboy.

"Hellboy" caught Hollywood by surprise; and if all surprises could mean millions of revenues, producers would not mind coming up with a sequel, and that's exactly what happened.

Hellboy 2 (The Golden Army) debuted in theaters last week with $35.9 million in gross receipts. Owing to the public's show of keen enthusiasm towards Hollywood's latest movie release, smiley illustrators were quick to go back to the drawing board and came up with their latest edition of this Hollywood- inspired red-skinned hero from the abyss. That's literally and figuratively-speaking "striking the iron while it's hot" (as hell).

Why do free smileys take this marketing route?

James Schmidt explains that his company strives to empower personal communication via emails and social networking sites, such as MySpace and Friendster, by creating innovative and trendy free smileys that motivate, inspire and entertain. Everything redounds on giving online users what they want to share, and seemingly blockbuster movies and TV programs appeal to most of them.

In Good Company with Oprah

As more and more new trends of free smileys are recently added on the internet, there is this brand of free smiley that is cuter, more vibrant and a total runaway winner: Oprah Free Smiley. Search for it.

Oprah Smiley became an instant hit as who would not recognize her, or remember her couch? It was not too long ago when a very famous celebrity pranced on her show's couch while professing his love to his new wife now, before Oprah's stunned audience, and equally surprised TV viewers. That show of affection was one for a Danielle Steele's paperback, while Oprah made it to free smileys' featured hits.

Now the "battle" rages on: which one would be internet's top grossing downloadable Hollywood free smiley or emoticon? Oprah, Hellboy or "Dark Knight"?

When dust settles back on the ground, one thing remains certain: hitching a marketing strategy on events, such as Hollywood's blockbusters' showdown, can be a big hit for website traffic. Don't miss it!

Step Brothers Movie Review-Will Ferrell At His Best!

I have to admit, I love Will Ferrell. The trouble is, when you love a guy, but his comedy starts to stink, and get stale, what do you do? This is what I was up against in the last few years with Ferrell's tiring attempts at comedy. So, when I decided to give this one a last ditch attempt and a final one more time, I have to say, I'm in love again. Step Brothers is an absolutely hilarious film.

From end to end, I don't remember the last time I've laughed this hard, without stop. This is what Ferrell needs to do, no more of those bio-spoofs of idiots that fall flat due to their tired joke. He is unstoppable as a part of an ensemble when he doesn't have to be the center of attention for an hour and half. Think not so funny but smart and witty.

Having a guy like John C. Reilly to play off of helps rein him in and give the audience a break, allowing the jokes to breath and not become stifled by the monotony of his schtick. The pairing of these two is a good combination. Reilly always plays it cool although he spices things just enough without going over the top like Ferrell get awfully into.

One of the refreshing points to this movie is that there is no romantic love interest. And many of the recent comedies starring Ferrell, there seems to be the token woman that he has to fall in love with and they have the awkward goofy romantic relationship. It seems like they've figured out that that's not necessary after all, people just want to go to the movies and laugh. This movie delivers on that point complete with gut wrenching bent over hilarious laughter.

Don't expect to see this one of the Oscars however. The movie's premise involves the get together of two older brothers who are almost in their 40s and are still living at home and with out any serious job prospects. Nancy Huff, (Mary Steenburgen showing that she is still around Hollywood), and Robert Doback, (Richard Jenkins letting his funny side out to complement the wonderful dramatic turn he gave in this year's The Visitor), are in love and perfect for one another.

With it to get together, their sons soon to be stepbrothers get to know each other. The two stepbrothers quickly realize that they are soulmates and are actually two children who were strapped in 40-year-old bodies. Thus, the comedy ensues. The chemistry between Ferrell and Reilly is unstoppable on screen, they are having fun, they must be improvising, and the movie continues to move forward with a great pace and lively energy.

As usual, this movies lined up with all the gags you can expect. The movie comes complete with rap music, grotesque singing, and of course gratuitous nudity. Give Ferrell a chance to rub his genitalia on Reilly's drumset. Wrap this all up with a whole bunch of swearing and were good to go. Surprisingly this movie did not receive and are raving. The fact that a couple lines from the trailer didn't make the final cut shows that the actors must have improvised and done multiple takes of each scene.

The movie makes use of director Apatow's genius, and delivers it in much the same way the movie Knocked Up did. Apatow and Ferrell combined with Reilly make an excellent combination and this is just another one in the steam roller hits that Apatow has come to be known for. If you enjoyed John C. Reilly in Walk hard: the Dewey Cox story, and Ferrell in movies like Elf, but you're sure to enjoy this one.
